Baldur's Gate 3: How to Get & Learn Secret Spells Artistry Of War & Dethrone (2024)

Any Wizard worth their Weave wants to learn as many spells as possible. When you begin your journey in Baldur's Gate 3, you'll spend a lot of time scouring each map for scrolls to learn. At each wizard level up, you can select two spells from a long list that your wizard can learn on their own.

Two spells hidden from that list are in the same place. These two powerful spells can only be found as scrolls deep in magical vaults, hidden far from prying eyes and kept secret. You can be the one to bring them to light.

Ramazinth's Tower

Both these spells are located inside Ramazinth's tower vaults. You can find these tower near the center of Baldur's Gate's lower city. It's also known as the Sorcerous Sundries. Getting to the vaults is actually quite easy.

On the second floor of the tower, where there are all the portals testing your Nightsong knowledge, you will find a locked door on the left side of the wall. Picking the lock on that door is the most direct route, but it's a sturdy lock. You will need a Rogue's expertise, or a lucky natural 20 to get it open. Once you're in, look for an intractable book near the bookcase. It’s called the clasped book, and it's the switch to activate the vault portal.

Artistry Of War

The Artistry of War spell is the quickest to get from this point. From the portal, walk forward toward a blank brick wall with a button beside it. You'll notice it's a fake wall, and a poorly disguised one at that. Hitting the button will take you to a treasure room. You want the display case with an ominous red glowing book inside.

Pick the lock with your Rogue and you will find the Red Knight's Final Stratagem. Read it, and you will be given a scroll for the fifth level Artistry of War spell. Copy it into your spellbook immediately.

This spell is magic missile amped up beyond what any upcast could do. The spell summons six skulls, each one able to target a different enemy and deal 2d6+6 force damage. It can deal anywhere from 48 to 108 damage in total. Strangely, this spell can't be upcasted with a sixth level spell slot; it will only consume fifth level slots.

Dethrone

The second spell, Dethrone, requires a bit more puzzling to acquire. You need to get inside the Vault of Karsus, but just reaching for the door is liable to get you disintegrated. The first thing you need to do from the vault portal is to head north to a door titled Ramazinth.

You'll be in a room with three doors, all differently named. You may see the name Karsus, but ignore it for now. From entering the room, you need to touch the door labeled "Silver Hand." This will transport you to another room with more doors. This time, you want the door labeled "Abjuration." After that, take the door called "Silver."

The Silver door will open, and all you have to do there is pull a lever at the end of the room. From there, backtrack to the starting room, and you'll be able to enter the Karsus door. Inside that door you'll find a pair of Dethrone scrolls: one lying on the shelf, the other inside the clearly cursed book.

Copy the scroll into your spellbook. Dethrone is a high-powered necromancy spell that deals 10d6+20 necrotic damage to a single target. It only takes a fifth-level spell slot, and can't be upcasted. Wizards with the necromancy subclass will want to keep this spell prepared. It's stronger than Blight, and will land a killing blow to trigger their grim harvest ability.

Summon Deva

The third spell is actually the easiest to get. Once you're inside the vault, there's not even a lock door in your way. Between rooms, you'll notice hallways that look like they have drops on either side.

The floor is invisible. You can walk anywhere you want without fear of falling. Those corridors have chests on either side, and you should loot them.

The real treasure is behind those chests. Behind two of them are illusory walls. One leads to a magic lamp, while the other leads to Lorroakan's study. Inside, you can find a magic book called Caution Before the Seelie.

Read that book, and you'll get a scroll of Bestival Communion. Inscribe the scroll into a wizard's spell book to learn how to Summon Deva. It's a fifth level spell that grants you access to a powerful summon. It's usually something only Clerics can do and for a higher spell slot no less.
